Helbling Auctioneers is pleased to have been chosen to offer this special
collection at auction. Many of you have seen this award winning
collection on display over the past 30 years at Central States and
Prehistoric American artifact shows. The focus of this collection is
quality, with at least one great example representing the entire tool kit
of the Indians living along the High Plains of the Missouri river in both
North and South Dakota covering 13,000 year’s. All time periods and
tool types will be represented from Paleo hunters to Historic contact
including the Fur Trade era and the Indian wars. The abundance of
bison bone had a great influence on the tools found in this collection. It’s
taken 50 years to put this grouping together. Almost all of the artifacts
were purchased from the finders- Monroe Killy, Chester Gewalt, George
Flaskerd, Harvey Soulen and Lloyd Dugstad- founding members of the
Minnesota Archaeological Society. They made many trips to the Dakotas
in search of artifacts and arrowheads from the 1930’s on, buying from
other collector’s until the dams being built when they were invited to
dig the trash pits at many of the sites. As these collections became
available they were added to the collection featured in this auction.

All time periods will be represented from Paleo, Early Archaic, Middle
Archaic, Late Archaic, Transitional, Developmental, Classic and Historic.
Sale highlights include a fine grouping of axes & hammers, bone-
handled knives with stone, brass, copper or iron blades. An outstanding
group of engraved ice gliders. A rare miniature weeping eye shell
maskette. All point types will be represented including Clovis, Folsom,
Agate Basin, Scotts Bluff, Hell Gap, Eden, Alberta, Angostura, Firstview,
Goshen, Plainview, Corner Tang, Side Knives, Besant, Hanna, Duncan,
Long Creek, Looking Bill, Oxbow, Mckean, Deep Water Creek, Pelican
Lake, Plains Side Notched, Samantha, Avonlea, Swift Current including
knives and thumb scrapers. Also points & tools made from Bone, glass,
Iron and Brass.
The finest Gem quality materials including Knife River Flint, Agates,
Plate Chalcedony, Agateized Petrified wood, Hartville Uplift, Spanish
Diggings, Swan River, Porcellanite and Catlinite.
